Rehearsal for MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Chattanooga Symphony & Opera

Helena Binder focuses on exercises that connect opera singers both emotionally and physically to the music, not just the words. She has wonderful insight into the needs of students and professionals alike and has given me invaluable performance tools that have applied beyond the classroom and into my career.

—Amy Oraftik, Mezzo-Soprano

Helena Binder goes directly to the core of a theatrical / operatic character. By emphasizing the real emotional responses experienced by us all, she is wonderfully helpful in assisting performing artists in finding their characters’ true motivations and how those motivations affect their relationships to others.

—Jeffrey Stevens, Music Director, Opera Workshop Repertory Coach,
Opera Institute, Boston University

Her exercises mesh beautifully with the course goals of developing personal creativity and fluency in brainstorming. Helena is a masterful and inspiring teacher with high energy who connects easily with students.

Helena forced me to look at the text in an entirely new way, and gave me the courage to let the audience see something within me. To have them see not just a character but real life emotions. Her words and wisdom resonate within me to this day.

—Scott Connor, Bass

While teaching acting at the Opera Institute of the School of Music at Boston University and at New England Conservatory she has emphasized the connection between performer and text. She coaches individuals preparing for roles and auditions, and gives master classes in aria and monologue presentation as well as general professional comportment and style.
